The 4 Best Tips for Canine Oral Health

Did you know that maintaining your canine’s dental hygiene directly affects the rest of their physical health? According to the American Kennel Club, nearly 80% of dogs will show some signs of periodontal disease by the age of three. That’s an alarming number, considering dental decay in canines can lead to heart, liver, and kidney disease.

Luckily, there are some easy ways to ward off poor oral hygiene and keep your puppy’s kisses fresh. These are the top four ways to do so:

1. Brush Thoroughly on a daily routine

Try to create a schedule or routine for brushing your dog’s teeth. Talk to your veterinarian for recommendations on breed and unique needs. Try to brush daily, at the minimum we recommend doing so at least once or twice a week.

2. Use Canine Toothpaste and Brushes

Canine brushes will allow you to get deep into those crevices with angled handles without hurting your dog’s mouth thanks to its soft bristles. To make brushing even more effective, opt for canine toothpaste over the human kind, as it contains specific nutrients made for dogs which come in tasty meaty flavors your pup will love.

3. Use Chew Toys and Chew Treats

In-between brushing sessions, you can keep your dog entertained while also boosting their oral hygiene with chew treats and toys. Both fight off plaque and tartar buildup for strong and sparkling doggy teeth.

 4. Visit Your Veterinarian Once or Twice a Year

Maintaining oral hygiene at home is effective and necessary. However, it doesn’t make up for veterinary visits. Your veterinarian will scrape away stubborn plaque where a brush won’t do the trick while also examining for more serious issues.

Don’t just get your tips from us, though. Contact your veterinarian to learn exactly what your dog’s dental needs are.
