Understanding Heartworm

Heartworms are parasitic worms that live in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels of an infected animal. It is transmitted through mosquito bites, and it’s most commonly found in dogs, cats, and ferrets. When a mosquito bites an infected animal, it ingests microscopic larvae, which then develop into adult worms living in the heart and lungs of the pet that is bitten.

Signs & Symptoms of Heartworm

The signs and symptoms of heartworm in pets vary from mild to severe. In dogs, common symptoms include coughing, exercise intolerance, weight loss, labored breathing, lethargy or reluctance to move, and a swollen abdomen. Cats can show signs of heartworm disease too, but they are often much less obvious than those in dogs. Common symptoms in cats include coughing, weight loss, lethargy or reluctance to move, and vomiting.

Prevention Is Key

The best way to protect your pet from heartworm is through preventive measures such as using a preventative heartworm medication. You can get this medication from your veterinarian, who can also do a simple blood test to determine if your pet is infected. Your pet should be tested at least once a year and get their medication once a month.

Heartworm Awareness Month is an important reminder for all pet owners to make sure their furry friends are protected from this serious parasite. If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to contact your veterinarian for advice and information on how to keep your pet safe from heartworm.
